Last week I had the privilege of attending Genexus 27 – our global event meeting with customers from all over the world. There were more than 4,000 people attending the event from USA, Japan, China, South Africa, and from other 20 countries.
We kicked off with our CEO’s vision (Nicolás Jodal) and where we’re headed next. He shared that there are 3 technologies that are dictating the business directions and, consequently, Genexus’ efforts in development. Some of these technologies are getting mature sooner than others. He mentioned AI, Machine Learning (ML), Blockchain and Internet of Things (IoT). Specifically, about AI and Machine Learning – this is where we believe it is the best time to explore these technologies to the extreme. The time is now!
The current state of Artificial Intelligence is showing that algorithms are making things easier now. We are seeing models that work and they are part of the machine learning process.
The foundation for GeneXus is AI and has been since the company launched over 30 years ago. We are in a leadership position when talking about tools based on AI. However, when associating AI and ML, the main issue is the collection of data. The success for AI and ML depends primarily on data collection. To define models and situations to be used in the learning process, it is necessary to collect a huge amount of data (see below about Big Data).
As part of the natural evolution of AI/ML, soon we will add Natural Language Processing (NLP). In this regard, GeneXus is working to deliver a Genexus chat bot generator which can be imperative to some of our customers.
The world of digital transformation is growing at an exponential rate, and the focus of digitalization is rapidly shifting from one technology enabler to another.
A couple of years back, it was all social, mobile, analytics, and cloud. While these technologies are still significant enablers, they have become commonplace in digital strategies, which is driving other technologies to provide much-needed differentiation in an ocean of competition and disruptors.
The current hype is all Big Data, IoT, blockchain, and AI.
So why this is the right time for AI/ML? One of the biggest changes from 30 years ago when GX was founded is processing power. We have so much more processing power today than we had when Genexus delivered its first solution. Another area that is vastly different in hardware is the ability of powerful graphics processing units (GPUs) to solve complex or compute-intensive processes. And the promise of quantum computers providing an optimization of algorithms will provide all the power of quantum computing.
Cloud is also an important enabler; you can now rent your favorite Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and run your most complex algorithm in the cloud without the delays of buying the hardware, hiring the infrastructure guys, installing, testing, etc. We have the agility to get started much faster than we did before cloud.
And data, the abundance of data is a huge boon for machine learning – the “learning” part of ML is where Big Data comes in, where the algorithm looks back at history and learns from data to help predict the future.
And if we take a unique perspective about why the time is now for AI/ML, think about this:
- Just 3% of companies have completed enterprise digital transformation projects. And 92% of those companies have significantly improved or transformed customer engagement.
- 81% of business executives say platforms will reshape industries into interconnected ecosystems.
- More than half of large enterprises (80% of the Global 500) will join industry platforms by 2018.
The foundation for a collaborative environment (interconnected ecosystems), the ability to increase customer user experience and provide digitalization of process, communication and execution, is based on automation and, ultimately, decision making based on processes which is basically AI/ML.
GeneXus is the most complete provider of AI tools for software development that is redefining the digital era and helping companies to go thru all the challenges and disruptions caused by new technologies and business needs.
